[1] John E Velehradsky (31-May-2017 08:13 AM)

As a youngster in 1943-44, I traveled to Pampa Air Field twice to visit my brother, who was training to be a pilot. I recall the wooden sidewalks, the tar paper buildings, the recreation area with its Coke machine and pool tables. We stayed at the hotel pictured in the book. I also recall a huge pile of grain covering the street in Pampa. We traveled by Burlington train from Omaha to Kansas City and by the Santa Fe from Kansas City to Pampa.

I have my father's ( William Byron Hankee )copy of Solo and was pleasantly surprised to see this appear in the collection. I've enjoyed reading all of the comments made among fellow cadets and friends. I shared this site with my older brother who informed me that he was named after the cadet pictured next to my father ( Quentin C. Hanel ); something I had not known. Thanks to the AAFC for establishing this wonderful website and honoring those who served. Marty/Rick Barbush

[1] Leeland H (30-Aug-2016 12:30 PM)

My wife and I would like to buy a copy of this book if anyone has one they'd like to sell or knows anyone who does. Her grandfather is Robert Adam Thompson who is pictured in this. It is the only known photograph we have of him since he died in a training accident in 1952 when my wife's father was only 4 years old and his mother died only a few years after that. Additionally most of his service records burned in the great archive fire of 1973 which has made it difficult to find information on him. We finally found enough clues to find that he'd attended flight school at Pampa which brought us here. We would also be interested in talking to or corresponding with anyone who knew my wife's grandfather.

[1] Susan Ewing Wolfe (07-Jun-2016 04:14 PM)

I live near Brooks Field and my father trained there and was a member of the graduating class 42-A. He went on to be a Pilot of a B-24 that flew out of Iron Range, Australia. Brooks Field is now mostly sub-divisions and commercial property and is no longer an active military base. However they have a nice little museum in one of the hangers, with many pictures of troops that trained there.

My best congratulations to the initiative of making available these historical records. They have been very useful in the biography I am writing about the Brazilian pilot Roberto Brandini, fighting against the Tedeschi in Italy during the WWII, October1944 to May1945. Other Brazilian pilots belonging to the Class 44-E I met before they passed away had good memories and were proud to serve in US Air Force. One of the most striking thing was how good they were treated by the local people!

I am writing a book about Ray Firmani called "Against All Odds, The Ray Firmani Story." Ray went on to become a lead B-17 pilot in the 486th Bomb Group (8th Air Force). He flew 25 successful missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Ray is now 94 years young and doesn't miss a beat.

What a wonderful momento. My Uncle William J. McGowan received his wings and 2nd Lt. commission in December, 1943 at Eagle Pass. I would love to see the correlating "Eagles" book for his graduating class. Would you know what the letter-year would be? Lt. McGowan was killed when his P47 went down about 6-months later on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and I am trying to piece together his short life for my mother.

THANK YOU for making it available...

[2] Frank T (31-Jul-2015 07:35 AM)

Thanks for that tip. I just watched the show. It was a shame to get that far and then have the bird burn up.

[1] DAVE STANLEY (28-Mar-2015 01:54 PM)

I saw a documentary a few months back about a B-29 that was rebuilt in place in northern Iceland. Just as the crew was taxiing for takeoff a thing called the "PUTT PUTT" came loose and burnt the plane to the ground. The crew barely got out uninjured. I wanted to read up on the B-29 while I had a chance.

Class 44-J, Stamford Flying School, Arledge Field, Stamford, Texas

Class book for primary pilot class 44-J, Stamford Flying School, Arledge Field, Stamford, Texas.

[2] Mike Voisin (19-Jan-2016 04:55 PM)

Ben, Every air field used the same designations for its classes, even though they were different classes. For instance primary pilot class 44-J at one field had different cadets than primary pilot class 44-J at another. Furthermore, a given group of cadets used the same class designation as they graduated each phase of their training. Each phase (pre-flight, primary, basic, and advanced) was usually at a different air field. So you will see primary class 44-J at one field. These cadets graduated and went on as basic flight class 44-J at another field. By the way, the designation 44-J means they would eventually graduate advanced flight training in 1944. The "J" does not indicate the exact month in 1944. That depends on the type and duration of training at a given air field. "A" would be at the start of the year, and "J" later on, perhaps spring, etc.

[1] Ben Atkinson (19-Jan-2016 03:44 PM)

My dad trained with the Pilot Class 44-J La Junta Army Air Field, Colorado 23 December 1944 based what told us before he passed on. After finding this class book it does not seem to be the same 44-J this one is out of Texas. Can anyone clarify.

Thank you for your comment Larry. I do not any more training books, unfortunately. My Dad was in the 44th Bomb Group, here is a link I found for their history http://www.8thairforce.com/44thbg/ if you are interested.
Again, thank you for your interest and you comment. I'm sorry I didn't answer your comment more timely, I should have checked back at this site more often.

Great addition to the Rankin Collection, glad to see another one. Tanks for the contribution. Maybe you have other class books from his other training related to ultimately ending up driving a B-24 you can provide. My dad was a Radio Operator/Radio Mechanic on B-24's.
