Pampa Army Air Field Base personnel book for the Pampa Army Air Field, Pampa, Texas. View the Wings Over America Collection (47 items) [1] John E Velehradsky (31-May-2017 08:13 AM)As a youngster in 1943-44, I traveled to Pampa Air Field twice to visit my brother, who was training to be a pilot. I recall the wooden sidewalks, the tar paper buildings, the recreation area with its Coke machine and pool tables. We stayed at the hotel pictured in the book. I also recall a huge pile of grain covering the street in Pampa. We traveled by Burlington train from Omaha to Kansas City and by the Santa Fe from Kansas City to Pampa. |

Please contact me if anyone has one. Thanks [4] ERNEST Marshall (17-Nov-2021 05:25 PM)I have a copy of "PASSING LIGHT' for the class of 1943...Most probably owned by a student from No. 6 Squadron...Both group photographs on the two pages in the booklet for this squadron are signed by many members....If anyone is interested in this document please contact me via e-mail...marshall850@hotmail.com...Cheers Barry Marshall [3] Warren B Carah (20-Apr-2020 09:35 AM)This graduation book belonged to my father, Lt. Col. John M. Carah, who completed the USAAF Basic Flying School at Lemoore in early Fall of 1942. He did his primary flight training at King City and completed Multi-Engine Advanced training at Douglas AAF, Arizona in February, 1943 (Class 43B). He then went to B-17 transition school at Blythe AAF, competing the course in March 1943. He then went to Pyote AAF in Texas for Group training with the newly hatched 381st BG. His Group flew to England in May 1943 and started combat operations in June 1943. My father's B-17, 42-29928, was shot down over Normandy, France on 4 Jul 1943. He became an evader and escaped to Switzerland where he became a part of the Military Attache's staff. He returned to the US in March, 1944 and spent the remainder of the was as a ferry pilot with the ATC. He made the military his career and retired in 1966 after assignments in Saudi Arabia, Europe, Asia, Guam and various domestic bases. [2] Ken (28-Oct-2019 07:25 PM)I would like to know my father who I believe was in an aviator class at Lemoore Army Air Base in April 1944. We have never met and he is possibly deceased. I do not know his name. However, my mother is Yvonne Agnes (Bonnie) Yeager. Yvonne died in 1966. In 1944 Yvonne was 19 years old and had graduated from Hanford High School in 1943. I have very little data and will very much appreciate any information no matter how insignificant. [1] Carl Trinkle (27-Oct-2012 10:23 PM)I flew out of the Lemoore army air corps base in the late 60s and 70s flying Stearmans crop dusting at day and night I was working for the fellow that bought the base from the city of Lemoore Ca. He had 13 stearman aircraft in the one big hanger, All were equipped for night spraying. The stearmans are also an era long gone. The old hangar is still there. |

Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions for B-29 Description, operating instructions and equipment for the B-29 Superfortress. [3] John Sz (24-Jan-2016 10:09 PM) If you are a researcher on the B-29 [2] Frank T (31-Jul-2015 07:35 AM)Thanks for that tip. I just watched the show. It was a shame to get that far and then have the bird burn up. [1] DAVE STANLEY (28-Mar-2015 01:54 PM)I saw a documentary a few months back about a B-29 that was rebuilt in place in northern Iceland. Just as the crew was taxiing for takeoff a thing called the "PUTT PUTT" came loose and burnt the plane to the ground. The crew barely got out uninjured. I wanted to read up on the B-29 while I had a chance. |

Pilot's Manual for Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Pilot's manual for the B-17F and B-17G Flying Fortress. [1] Robert (20-Apr-2022 06:53 PM)Can someone please help me locate or get a copy/PDF of the B-17 Manual that talks about the IFF system onboard the B-17? Wiring diagram and aircraft layout for switches and lights. Colors and how they were used during missions. I know there were Blue, Amber, Green and read lights as well as white. If I understand correctly the lights were part of a code (that changed daily or by the mission) to help all the aircraft either in identifying who was who or in formation form up? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

He was a civilian pilot and later flew C-46's over the hump. Wally passed away several years ago in Florida, one of the great unsung heros of the Kunming express. |

I live near Brooks Field and my father trained there and was a member of the graduating class 42-A. He went on to be a Pilot of a B-24 that flew out of Iron Range, Australia. Brooks Field is now mostly sub-divisions and commercial property and is no longer an active military base. However they have a nice little museum in one of the hangers, with many pictures of troops that trained there.
