Thank you SO much for including this! I have been furiously searching for records about my grandfather, who died in an F-84 crash in ?49, for over a decade and just saw this yearbook for the first time which has his photo. I cried with joy stumbling upon another piece of the puzzle! Thank you for your work helping families like mine recover and protect our legacy and the sacrifice of our predecessors.

[1] Gary T Staffo (18-Feb-2019 02:55 PM)

My Uncle Lt John C Staffo Class 43-06 got his AAFBS Bombardier Wings at Big Spring, TX and was KIA with the 99th BG 348BS on October 10, 1943 on a mission flying from Oudna Field in Tunisia to bomb the Tatoi Aerodrome near Athens, Greece. He bailed out over the Gulf of Corinth with 4 others, of which only one, FO George Rohrer, Co-Pilot survived. My Uncle and three others were strafed in their parachutes by a JG-27 pilot. The B-17 F 4230446, "Her Majesty" piloted by Sam Gilmor attempted to make an emergency landing because the remaining 4 crew members were too seriously wounded to bailout. 446 attempted to surrender by lowering her wheels, but the international sign of surrender was ignored, and witnesses in the village of Panareti Greece near where 446 crashed claim she was strafed almost all the way down. I am looking for anyone else who has information from other members of the 43-06 Class, especially letters, photos, etc. Please contact me directly and check out Lou Tholes book Forgotten Fields Volume IV - Then and Now which includes AAFBS Big Springs, TX and a photo of my Uncle and excerpts from letters he wrote while there.
You may contact me by email at gary.staffo@hq.doe.gov.

p.s. I did not know he was a cadet officer, wow!

[1] AB (19-Dec-2017 04:56 PM)

Thank you for posting this book documenting the graduation of my dad. I remember reading through it as a kid when rummaging around in the attic and it had a big impact on me. I look forward to sharing with other family members. I always wondered how the other classmates fared throughout the war. My dad obviously survived and passed away in 2011 at 92. He was proud to have served. He was one of the lucky ones.

Mike, I'm so thrilled to have discovered this publication. My step father is Leon B. Slobodzian. I know he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Metal with three Leaf Clusters as a B-17 Lead Bombardier but I only have one photo of him in uniform with three of his buddies. Sadly this amazing, kind and gentle man passed away on Dec 10, 2001. My research is for our family tree and I'm happy to say this will become an important attachment. Thank you so much!

Hello- I came across this when searching for my great uncle 2nd lt Francis Leo Barr. He went MIA on feb 4, 1944. Do you happen to have pictures of him from this year book? Or any directions to where I can get some? I am sure it will make my pappy's (and his younger brothers) year.

@Rory, you can post a comment here stating you are looking for a particular year or a year and class number. Someone may notice it. I also have a couple volumes in the pipeline that I will post.

Volumes sometimes come up for auction on eBay. You can also contact a public library or historical society near the base. They may have a number of volumes in their collection. Otherwise, sign up for AAF Collection update notifications (on the home page) to be notified when new items are added.

I have my father's ( William Byron Hankee )copy of Solo and was pleasantly surprised to see this appear in the collection. I've enjoyed reading all of the comments made among fellow cadets and friends. I shared this site with my older brother who informed me that he was named after the cadet pictured next to my father ( Quentin C. Hanel ); something I had not known. My Mother, Jo Flaherty, was enrolled at the University at this time. She belonged to the Alpha Phi Sorority, whose sorority house was requisitioned for Cadet housing. she married a local fellow, my father (also an Army Air Corps Pilot), upon his return after the War. She related that the co-ed student population was very happy to have these boys come to Missoula, for most of the able bodied fellows had gone off to war. I would imagine these Cadets were just as pleased!

[1] Dan Beverly H Reigle (28-Oct-2018 04:01 PM)

We are thrilled to find this copy of this class book. Beverly's father, James R. Butler, is on pdf page 34, and his friend Barlow Brown is on pdf page 33. They were "best men" for each other's wedding, Browns' just before they left Blackland, and Butlers just after they arrived at Gowen Field in Boise for B-17 transition. Butler flew 54 missions in the 301st BG in the Mediterranean theater, and remained in the AAF/USAF after the war until he was killed in a B-26 accident flying out of Biggs AFB in 1949. Brown flew in the 388th BG out of England, was shot down on 6 Sep 1943, and interned in Switzerland until the end of the war. He lived in Seattle until 1980.

Many thanks for collecting these materials and making them available.
