As far as I know, the emblem on the cover is not a squadron or unit insignia. It was probably used by the publisher for this series of books.

[1] norm forbes (06-Mar-2011 09:19 PM)

was the emblem used as a cap badge or on the jacket?

[4] Lynn (05-Aug-2018 06:45 PM)

My dad was in the 84th College Training Detachment Squadron "A" - I am trying to get more information about this group. Did some of the men transfer there from Enid, OK air base? I'm writing a book about him and trying to piece together information since his military records were all lost in the national archives fire. I have a picture that has printing on it that says it is:
Squadron "A"
84th College Training Detachment (Airborn)
Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kans.
April 17th, 1943.
I would be happy to email you a scanned copy is you'd like. Any information about this squadron would be appreciated! Thanks!

I research veterans from Shelby County, Texas and ran across William R. Parrish, Center, Texas in this book. He went on to fly many P-47 fighter missions in the Pacific. Was reported missing for a few days in June 1944. Survived the war and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. He was attending Sam Houston State Teachers College and bull riding in rodeos. On October 9, 1948 the bull he was riding fell on him and he suffered a skull fracture and brain injuries. He later died of these injuries at the Naval Hospital in Houston, Texas on Veterans Day, November 11, 1948 at the age of 25.

My Grandfather WOJG Richard (Dick) Carter Metcalf was the Skipper/Master of P-570 in WWII. 15th ERBS, 13th A.F, Leyte Gulf Philippine???s, Pacific. It is believed that his crash boat picked up the crew of Lucky Strike B-24M-5-CO Liberator Bomber 44-41876 of the 380th Bomb Group crash landed off of Borneo. My Grandfather Staff Sargent Milton George Mitchel was the BT Gunner. They figured it out at my parents??? wedding.

[5] Joh Piazza III (01-Mar-2015 05:52 PM)

My father, John Piazza II, USArmy Tech Sargeant T-5 ,rode a particular army crash boat to the San Jose Islands chemical weapons test facility. He was a good friend of the captain, who would always invite him for breakfeast. His dates of service in Panama were @ July 1945-July 1946. Any information on Captain, Crew, and/or boat would be welcome. My thanks to all aboard who showed good friendship to a brother in arms. I may have some photos of the boat but I will have to search an extensive collection.
Sincerely,
John Piazza III

He is extemely proud to be able to show our family members (down to and including the great grandchildren) pictures of the boats he served on. Thanks you very much for sharing them.

[2] Les Ashton (12-Nov-2021 08:07 AM)

Hello Mike.
A picture of my father, Cadet D.R.G. Ashton, is in vol 3 although the cover of the book that I have has vol 11 stamped into it. Dad passed away on 10 December 2013, 5 days after his 95th Birthday. He occasionally spoke of his time at Terrell field, as he called it. He was eventually invalided out after it was discovered that he suffered from air sickness.
The Forward says "In its two years of operation", but nowhere, as far as I can see, does it say what year that was or, idealy, what months the trainig tok place.

all the very best to you.
Les Ashton

25 June 1943 Class 43-F: KIA: Leonard Ivan Hughes Air Plane Command (APC) Pilot B-29-61-BW Superfortress serial #44-69742 "Sting Shift" Z-Square-30, 882nd Bomber Squadron, 500th Bombardment Group (VH), 73rd Bomb Wing, XXI Bomber Command, 20th Air Force stationed at Isely Field on Saipan in the Mariana Islands, WPTO

[8] Craig Weisman (01-Dec-2019 12:58 PM)

My dad was in Class 43-B as mentioned in the History of Eagle Pass AAF. I'm not sure if he participated in the February '43 aerial demonstration, but it's documented in Movietone Volume 25 No. 50. It's at the end.

[7] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 10:07 PM)

My Dad was later deployed to the Pacific Theater where he participated in several campaigns in the Phillippines and Okinawa. I later visited the Philippines on R&R from Vietnam. Assigned to the 25th Infantry Division Artillery for 18 months as an assistant operations officer and Aerial Observer, I earned four Air Medals for operations as a crew member. After 20 years active and reserve duty, I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

[6] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 09:46 PM)

I wonder which members of the Detachment Medical Department attended to my Mom and me as we recovered from my surprise landing in the Field dispensary?

[5] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 09:38 PM)

Could 2LT Jess H. Hendrix, Commanding Officer, 908th Quartermaster Company be related? I doubt it, my parents never mentioned him but I am curious.

[4] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 09:29 PM)

The episode in February 1943 of the just graduated pilots flying over a group of spectators and firing their machine guns at simulated enemy targets angered my Dad every time he recounted it. He said a slight change in the pitch of the planes could have caused the bullets to hit the crowd.

[3] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 09:17 PM)

There were some accidental insertions in the previous comment. My Dad, a Staff Sergeant, is in the fourth row of page 84. His good friend, who I knew as a family friend in later years, Fred Henexson is in the fourth row of page 85.
Things were rough at this wartime air field which was not equipped for birthing babies. I wasn't weighed until several days later at home on scales borrowed from the vegetable market.

[2] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 09:09 PM)

This book brings to mind several storiehttp://aafcollection.info/images/icon-nospam.pngs of family folklore and raises questions for speculation.
A member of the 1046th Guard Squadron may have welcomed the Army ambulance bringing my soon to be Mom to the Field from town. As proper in wartime security, he asked for her pass to which the Ambulance driver reportedly replied, "Pass hell, she's having a baby!"

[1] Kenneth Hendrix (15-Apr-2016 08:05 PM)

My Dad, Sergeant James R. Hendrix, from Oklahoma by way of Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas, was a mechanic at EPAAF during this period. My Mom, soon to be 95, was scheduled to return to Brooke Army Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio for my delivery but I decided on a surprise arrival and was delivered at the EPAAF Dispensary where my Mom says I was a hit with the other inpatients. That was 21 April 1943.
