My father is in this book and would go on to graduate with class 43J. He served in the ETO flying C 47?s even though he was trained as a single engine pilot. I would love to hear from anyone else who might have a connection to this class.

My Dad, Sanford F. Delano was stationed here as a flexible gunnery instructor. My Mom and I were living off base at 16 Saunders Street. I remember none of it but have pics to prove it.
I still have some of his training manuals. (what to do with them?)

My dad served in the US Army Air Forces during WWII. He was stationed in Laredo, Texas & was a Flexible Gunnery Instructor before he was sent overseas & served in the CBI Theater.
I was blown away to find his photo in this book. Great bit of history.

[2] Rich Harness (29-Aug-2018 08:50 AM)

My Dad also went through training with the 1023rd. He went on to serve in 445th Fighter Squadron (412th Fighter Group) in southern California. I'd be interested in sharing info with any one whose father also served in this squadron.

[1] Benjamin Garcia (13-Mar-2018 12:07 PM)

Thanks for this book. I was doing some research on my father's service and knew he was at Laredo Air Field in 1943 from his old pictures. I was very surprised when I found his picture with the 1023RD Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Again, thanks for this history lesson. I will pass it along to our daughter who is currently serving in the Air Force.

AAF Navigation School, Hondo Army Air Field, Hondo, Texas, Volume 01, Number 06

Monthly magazine for personnel training as aircrew members.

[5] Mike Voisin (10-Jun-2022 10:07 PM)

Al, I'm not sure why aviation cadets are listed. Perhaps they were about to begin their navigation training. Yes, graduate navigators usually became Second Lieutenants or Warrant Officers.

[4] Al Claiborne (10-Jun-2022 01:02 PM)

Great work! Your July 1943 "Log" includes a "Navigators' Index," pages 34-36. For those listed under "Aviation Cadets," this indicates their ranks at the time they began with Class 43-10 on March 12, 1943, correct? They were commissioned as Second Lieutenants at graduation, correct? Thanks very much.

[3] Walt Webb (22-Sep-2017 03:49 PM)

Late getting back to you. I'm happy to report that at least I found my cousin's name (Edwin Ely Scranton) under the Navigators' Index for his Hondo Class 43-10 in the July 1943 Log! Thanks very much for the service you provide!

[2] Mike Voisin (17-Aug-2017 09:21 PM)

Walt, these magazines were published at Hondo, but they were widely circulated among many air fields. They are not class books so you will not find individual cadets. Currently there is only one class book from Hondo in the collection and it is class 43-16.

[1] Walt Webb (17-Aug-2017 07:47 PM)

Trying to select the Hondo issue(s) pertaining to my MIA cousin's nav training at Hondo. He was in Class 43-10 from Mar. 12-July 15, 1943 (when he graduated). He was in the AAF Navigation School, 88th Nav Training Gp, Cadet Detachment. His name: Edwin E. Scranton. Could you confirm that the issues I should be searching are V.1,#6 (July 43) & V.1,#8 (Aug. 43)? Thanks!!!

[3] Carla (03-May-2015 03:46 PM)

Ed Evensen was my uncle.

One of his assignments in the war was to fly transport aircraft (C47) 'over the hump', from various fields in Burma, to Kunming, in China, a job he described as "flying where there are rocks hiding in the clouds", referring to the necessity of navigating between mountains, as his heavily-laden aircraft did not have the "operational ceiling" to climb above them.

He survived the war, but had contracted malaria, and passed away in the late 1960's

[2] John pass (03-Jun-2013 05:21 PM)

Saw pic of Dan Madigan, my father in law who passed recently. Family is delighted and wonders about his classmates.

[1] Larry (04-Nov-2008 05:59 PM)

I enjoyed this class book because it listed the previous flight schools the student attended. Example, from Rankin Field the student progressed to another school then to Luke. Same for those from Visalia (Sequoia AAF). This feature of the book is important because it allows someone to track the progress of a given student or to follow a given class from Primary, Basic, etc.

Interesting that Rankin AAF is listed as the point of training vice the town it was located in (Tulare, CA), while the neighboring school, Sequoia AAF is listed as 'Visalia' which is the name of the town the school was located in.

[1] Bobby Silliman (22-Oct-2021 01:39 PM)

I know one of the airmen mentioned and shown in this class book. His name is Lt Evertt D. Atkinson and he turned 99 on June 3rd 2021. He shared a story with me regarding a cadet student named Malcolm F. Hayles. Evertt was flying as an instructor in an AT-6 two seat trainer. On December 11, 1943, and about 7 miles west of Luke Field, the engine died and would not re-start..Nothing was below them except giant cactus and huge boulders. Evertt took the controls and aimed his now gliding AT-6 at a small cotton patch that looked smooth enough to make a wheels up landing on. He did it with minimal damage to the aircraft! He saved a souvenir of the occasion, a small handful of cotton and cotton stems that were stuck in the engine cowling. He still has these after almost 75 years!

In this book I found Lt Stephen S. Hunter from New Roads, Louisiana. He was a pilot in the 838th Bomb Squadron, 487th Bomb Group (Heavy), at Army Air Forces Station 137 near Lavenham, Suffolk, England. Lt Hunter was killed in action during a mission to Magdeburg, Germany on January 14, 1945. Details are on his findagrave page:

[5] Damon Minvielle Jr (11-Mar-2015 08:17 AM)

My father was in this class and later flew a C-47 (DC-3) in the Pacific. He remained in the Air Force Reserve through around 1958, participating at Keesler AFB on the Gulf Coast in MS. While still on active duty just after war's end, one of the duty stations he saw was Atsugi Japan, which had been a major Imperial Navy airbase, and later became a major joint Japanese-American naval air station.

[2] dj (08-Dec-2012 03:05 PM)

If any of you are out there at Marfa at that time, his name is Bill Norlie. He was a flight instructor. Please email me at dawnaart@aol.com. As I mentioned in the message above he will be 93 in a couple of weeks. I'd love to bring over comments, notes, letters from guys and gals he was involved with during that time.
Thank you so much!
Sincerely,
Dawna

[1] dj (08-Dec-2012 03:02 PM)

Please help. My Dad is going to be 93 on Dec. 26th. He was a Pilot at Marfa Texas 44D. He's been wanting a cadet book, but I don't know where to find any. He lost all of his stuff in a fire years ago. If you have any ideas how to locate one...I'd love you for it.
Thank You,
Dawna
