I am interested in Air Corps Armorers classes from early to late 1942 at Lowry Field. My cousin graduated from one of the classes, am trying to locate a picture of him and his class. His name was William T. Williams from Tyrone, Pa. Enlisted 5 Jan. 1942 at Harrisburg, Pa. went through basic at Jefferson Barracks, then went to Drew Filed, Fl. I have some pictures of a trip he and some others took to the Rocky Mts. and thought it might be related to Armorer School. That was his MOS in the AAF.

Thanks,
Steve Weaver

Raleigh Eugene Phelps
Bmdr Class 43-01, 2 Jan 1943 at Victorville AAF.

Subsequently assigned as HQS Wing Bombardier-Navigator, to 873rd Bomb Squadron, 498th Bombardment Group, 73rd Bomb Wing, XXI Bomber Command, 20th Air Force, stationed at Isely Field on Saipan in the Mariana Islands.

On Sunday 1 April 1945, he flew as the Bomb-Nav Wing Observer aboard a Boeing B-29-40-BW Superfortress, serial #42-24614 nicknamed Joltin' Josie, The Pacific Pioneer (tail code: T-Square-5). It was one of 121 aircraft launched in a multi-group formation on a mission to bombard the Musashino Aircraft Engine Factory (target #357) near Tokyo, Japan.

His aircraft took-off at 2100 hours local with an intended course heading of 339 degrees on the planned 15-hour round-trip mission. Shortly after take-off, fumes in the cockpit were reported. The aircraft burst into flames and crashed with a large explosion about 300 yards offshore into Magicienne Bay on the southeast side of Saipan.

A Coast Guard vessel was dispatched within a few minutes, but upon reaching the burning aircraft, they were unable to find any survivors. All 12 aircrew members were officially listed as Killed-In-Action on 3 April 1945.

It is the FIRST PUBLICATION Hickam put out after the JAPANESE ATTACK on HICKAM. My father was in the 11th BOMB GROUP HEAVY the 42 SQUADRON. The COMMANDER IN THE BOOK IS GENERAL CLARENCE TINKER. The 11th BGH was at the BATTLE OF MIDWAY and his B-24 went down on the way to the BATTLE OF MIDWAY he was the FIRST US GENERAL LOST IN WWII. The link to the 11TH BGH has an administrator if you write him he is extremely knowledgeable of the units and activities in the USAAC in the PACIFIC THEATER. Believe me I am entirely in contact with families now, all the men I knew who served with my father have passed on.

[2] Mike Voisin (16-Mar-2020 09:35 AM)

Most of the photos in this book would be from 1942 and before. Many were "stock" photos taken at the base, and used in many different editions of the class book.

[1] Anonymous (15-Mar-2020 05:26 PM)

I am researching (for the family) the path of Dwight Morgan Holmes, US Army Air Corps, killed as a POW in WWII. 30th Bomber Squadron, 19th Bomber Group, Heavy V Bomber Command. He was at Hickman prior to being sent overseas.
Would this publication include photos prior to 1942; would this be relevant to the "life" Lt. Holmes experienced at Hickman? If so, I will send this on to the family, who are desperate to determine his path and photos.
